Statistics tell us that one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before the age of eighteen. With over 300 million people in the U.S., this puts the number of survivors of trauma in the millions.
Add to that the millions of people who grew up experiencing dysfunctional parenting, neglect, verbal or physical abuse, violence in their communities and schools, poverty… the list is endless. Is it any wonder we are a nation beleaguered by depression, anxiety, mental and emotional illness?
Our mental health care system is in crisis, inadequate and overburdened with more casualties than it can possibly address. These secret wounds go untended, dramatically affecting relationships, performance in the work place, physical health and the fulfillment of human potential.
While professional advocacy is warranted and certainly may be beneficial, it is often inaccessible. Patients who cannot get mental health care services turn to their primary care doctors for help. Physicians racing against the clock to meet the demands of a corporate medicine model push patients in and out a revolving door, handing out medications that do little more than numb victims, never addressing the underlying issues.
Rising above the pain and loss of childhood trauma requires tools and information. At Blue Morpho Journey, my education resource site, you will find information about the healing journey and therapeutic tools for recovery. It is my hope that these resources will help you to begin your own healing journey, knowing that there is hope for recovery.
